Originally written and performed by Willie Nelson in 1961, it was recorded by Patsy Cline later that same year and rose to #2 on the top ten charts. Partly due to the genre-blending nature of the song, it has been covered by dozens of artists in several genres over the years. Notable versions include those recorded by The Kills, Linda Ronstadt, Julio Iglesias, Kenny Rogers, Dottie West, kidneythieves, LeAnn Rimes, Don McLean and The Waifs. In 2007, the song was covered by English alternative band Apartment. Willie Nelson himself has also recorded several versions of the song over the years including a trio version with Elvis Costello and Diana Krall; nevertheless the song remains inextricably linked with Cline. Through the years it's also been covered by Joey Heatherton on her 1972 debut album, The Joey Heatherton Album. Shirley Bassey covered the song on her 1995 album Sings the Movies, and also performed it in concert several times. Cassandra Wilson covered the song on her 2003 album Glamoured. Norah Jones has covered the song. Christer Sjögren covered the song on his 2008 album Mitt sköna sextiotal. The Kills covered the song for their iTunes Live Session and frequently perform it live and La Toya Jackson covered the song on her 1994 country music album From Nashville to You.
