This is one of my very favorite vids. Avalanches have always fascinated me, and I have had a few close calls out west. The physics of them is just insane.Snow moving at 300 mph. and creating enough friction to melt it a little, and then when it stops it sets like Quickrete- only a few minutes to rescue anyone. This isn't about people being buried but rather the only road in or out of Ophir , Colorado. A hot August day is a good day to watch millions of tons of snow...

Amazing to see, but when you look at the type and size of the houses in the town, you can't help but think that when wealthy people decide they want a stunning view at any cost, they should be held accountable for the costs involved in a "clean up" like this. Honestly, there shouldn't be a SINGLE home on that mountain. If you have to cross over a dozen avalanche runouts to build your homes approach road, you shouldn't be allowed to build even an outhouse there....

Awesome power, Awesome beauty! I feel the same way about all the mansions on the coasts. The rest of us pay to help offset the insurance costs there as well.

Such awesome power!! Deadly beauty!! Also very Hypnotic & humbling. Avalanches demand (& get) respect. I also find them fascinating. I use to watch those avalanche movies when I was younger & always the best part of the movie was when the 'mountain' came down. The movie itself was usually stupid, but the star of the movie was always the snow..
